After a long summer, it was finally time to go home.

Shannon was mostly happy, and excited. She missed her mum so much, and missed the farm, and even missed the weird tourists who liked to take pictures of locals to submit to National Geographic photo contests. She missed everything about her homeland, and was eager to get home. And so she was standing outside the camp entrance after breakfast, suitcase, duffel, and sleeping bag neatly lined up as she waited for her arranged ride to the airport.

It was a little chilly, so she was wearing her favorite green cable knit sweater with dark jeans and moccasins. She played with the fancy S charm on the bracelet Jesse had given her for her birthday, looking down the road. She hadn’t seen any of her friends at breakfast, and was a little sad about that. But she couldn’t miss her ride.

The wind was kicking up a little; fall was rolling in. She pulled her red hair into a low ponytail so it wouldn’t flop all over the place.

She crossed her arms, sinking onto a bench. She pulled one knee to her chest, squinting into the sun. It would be nice and green in Ireland, rainy and bright. The tourist season would still be in full swing when she got home- she was leaving a little early- but she didn’t have too long before school started in September. She needed to read Pride and Prejudice. She made a mental note to buy it at the airport so she could read it during the flight- she was never a sleeper, even transatlantic.

She should probably call her dad at some point to tell him she was leaving, so he could stay in the loop. But talking to him always worsened her mood. So she’d wait a while.

She silently hoped some of her friends would show up. She would miss them, for sure. She hoped they wouldn’t move on too far without her. That was one thing she worried about: losing her friends. They meant a lot to her. She hoped they would know she wanted to say goodbye.

Well. She waited there for almost forty minutes, and finally the van showed up. She felt like someone kicked her in the gut. None of her friends had shown up. So these last couple of weeks had been miserable. Shannon was too homesick to be much fun. But still! She would have liked to say goodbye to some of them before she left. She looked over she shoulder as she stood up, hoping to see someone coming. Nope. Empty. They were all probably packing for the school year.

Whatever. She'd email them when she got home. She was, truth be told, a bit irked. But they wouldn't know that.

She smiled at the driver getting out to help her with her stuff. It was more of a grimace, but at least she was trying.

When her stuff was all loaded up, she crawled into the backseat and looked out the window, playing with that fancy little "S" again. The van pulled a U turn, going back to the ferry to the mainland. She sighed and rested her forehead on the window. She'd be back next year, but she couldn't help but think everyone would move on without her.

"Said goodbye to your friends, then, did ya?" The driver asked conversationally, glancing at her from the rear view mirror.

Shannon smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Didn't get the chance."

She looked back out the window. She just hoped her friends wouldn't forget her.
