Birthday Wishes [PG OPEN] « Thread Started on Jul 26, 2008, 2:30pm »
It was her birthday- her sweet sixteen- but Shannon wasn’t really expecting anything, especially since her mam lived on the other side of the world and her dad din’t really care. So imagine her surprise when, as she went to her cabin to get her fiddle for some practicing, there were not one, but two boxes on her bunk waiting for her! She smiled, flopped down on her bed, and tore open the tape on the larger box- from Emily Donnelly, her mother- and dug through packing peanuts until she pulled out…
Oh, it was pretty. Her mother must have sent it weeks before Shannon left for camp for it to get here. It was a stepdancing dress, blue metallic with golden twisting knots and…. it was much better than the plain green skirt she had brought. She admired it for a moment before she laid it on the bed and picked up the note that had fallen to the floor- Shannon- hope my favorite little lass has a wonderful sixteen! love mum- and folded it into her pocket before turning to the other package.
This one was more surprising. It was from her dad- the same dad she hadn’t seen since she was eleven- and she hesitantly opened this one, unsure of what to expect. As far as he knew, she still liked teddy bears and ponies.
It wasn’t as amazing as her mother’s present- a small, portable CD player with batteries, a Celtic music CD, and a gift card to Best Buy- but it was the though that counts. His note-[i]Your mum told me to send you stuff so you could practice. Happy birthday. Dad.[i]- explained it though; of course mum would be worried Shannon would forget to practice her dancing and that would not be good when she went back home. She was, after all, missing two months worth of lessons. But this was good. She could show her friends a little jig or something.
She sat down on the bunk, tracing her finger over the designs on the dress. It was so pretty. She couldn’t wait to have an occasion to wear it.

Sophia walked into the cabin, Ignius draped around her shoulders like a scarf. "Oh hey," she glanced at the dress in her hands. "Wow. That's really something. Why do you have it?" Sophia then picked up the note from Shannon's mother, her expression shocked as she read it. "It's your sweet sixteen? Why didn't you tell us, Shannon?" She put her python down on her bed and reached under her mattress to get out a hundred dollar bill. "I know american money is probably worth nothing in Ireland, but maybe you can buy something nice in the town here? Still, I wish I would have had more time to prepare. I would have been able to throw you a party. Ah well. I guess your party can be that Welcoming Dance. Are you going with someone yet?" she said as she sat up on her top bunk next to Ignius, glancing down to look at Pandora, who was sleeping quietly in the large dog bed. Sophia had already gotten her dress ready for the banquet. Her parents had sent one a few days ago. It was pretty cool, but Shannon's dress knocked her's out of the water.
Shannon almost jumped and fell off the bed when Sophia came in, but she calmed down when she saw her friend.
“Oh, hi!” she said cheerfully, trying not to notice the snake wrapped around Sophia like a scarf. “Yeah, I’m sixteen. I didn’t want to make a big deal, I mean, it’s just another birthday!” She resignedly took the money offered her, since Sophia could win any argument about anything including I don’t need a present. And she was right, American money was worth very little abroad. But she could get something nice for her mother, or something. Maybe something to thank Fergus for taking over her duties at the inn for the summer.
“It’s a stepdancing dress,” Shannon said from under the bed. She was digging around her stuff for the lace up, black cloth shoes that would go with it. She found them and tossed them on the bed with a pair of white knee high socks. “I don’t know why me mam though I’d need it- but since it’s the only attire I have that’s dance appropriate, I guess I’ll wear it to the dance.”
She could only imagine what a sight that would be. A bunch of American girls in pretty gowns, and then she walks in with her hair up and with her shoes tied tight as if she were going to a ceili.
“No, I don’t have a date yet,” she sighed, holding up the dress to her body and sticking a pointed foot out to examine the overall effect. “I’d kind of like to go with Liam. But he’s probably afraid I’ll trip over him and break his nose or something.” She laughed, jiggling the hanger a little to watch the skirt bounce. It really was a nice outfit. “What are you wearing and who are you going with?”
